The description is composed by our digital data assistant. Total tourism expenditure was estimated at €2.1 billion, 8% higher than that recorded in 2017. Most of these travellers came to Malta via air as the National Statistics Office (NSO) reports that only 47,005 tourists came to Malta in 2018 by sea. A further 35,229 were overnight cruise passengers. There was a 13% rise in the number of tourists coming to Malta throughout 2018, meaning that the country received 2.6 million visitors from all across the globe, statistics revealed by the Malta Tourism Authority on Tuesday show. The volume of tourism has doubled since 2010, when it stood at 1.3 million visitors. Malta expects to attract about 35,000 visitors this year, as the tourism sector accounts for over 27 per cent of the country’s economy.

The statistics show that tourism has seen a growth spurt once again in 2018, both in terms of total visits and in terms of the duration of visits. The total number of tourists who stayed in Malta for seven nights or more in 2018 was 1.3 million, an increase of 9.2% from the previous year when visits were shorter.

Even though the country welcomed over 2.7 million international visitors in 2019, the figures decreased by over 80 per cent since the beginning of the pandemic.
